Five years ago, my wife and I made a life-changing decision: we packed up our lives in the UK and moved to Australia, a country we had never set foot in before. We sold everything, leaving behind the familiar, and arrived with little more than a few suitcases, a sense of adventure, and a desire to build a better future for our family.

We didn’t realize at the time just how tumultuous those years would be. We landed just before the world was thrown into chaos by Covid. All the plans we had carefully made in the UK were tossed aside. But through all of that, we’ve achieved more than I ever imagined. We recently celebrated our 5th anniversary in this country, and our 4th of gaining permanent residency — milestones that remind me how far we’ve come.

Next week, I’ll be taking the citizenship test — the final step in securing dual citizenship for us and, most importantly, for our kids. The opportunity for them to have two passports, with the freedom to live and work on both sides of the globe, is a gift my wife and I never had growing up.
