On the weekend, my house’s solar panels caught fire. These panels had quietly served their purpose for ten years, silently converting sunlight into energy without a hint of trouble. They were so reliable that, like many things that just work, I barely thought about them anymore.

When the smoke alarms suddenly blared, my first instinct was to search inside the house. Room by room, I looked for the source, but found nothing obvious. It wasn’t until I stepped outside and gained a different perspective — walking to a higher vantage point — that I finally saw the smoke rising from the roof. A neighbor who had a clear view had already called the fire service, who arrived just as I started using the garden hose.
